General Circulation Books

Only a library patron holding a current GLCC ID card, a Community User Card, or a participating MeL Visiting Patron Library Card are allowed to check out books.

Patrons are not allowed to check out materials for another patron.

Books are due on the date printed on the receipt at the time of check out.

Books may be renewed through the online catalog, in person, or over the phone.

Library patrons are responsible for the condition, proper use, and the safe return of all library materials and equipment they check out and any fines incurred for late, damaged, unreturned, or lost library materials.

Juvenile Books

The Library has a collection of juvenile books located in the Stacks Room. These books circulate in the same manner as general stack books and are designated by a “J” before the call number.

Reserve Books

At the request of professors, library materials are placed on “reserve” and put behind the circulation desk for the use of students in a particular class. Reference books will not be placed on reserve.

Students wanting access to these materials can come to the circulation desk, give the library staff their current student ID, the title of the book, and the call number. Most materials can only be checked out for 2 hours and must stay in the library. Some materials may circulate for 1 to 7 days.

A limited number of reserve readings are available in electronic format. Check with your professor or the library website (www.glcc.edu/academics/library.aspx) to check availability.

Reference Books

General reference books such as encyclopedias, bibliographies, dictionaries, indexes, handbooks, concordances, almanacs, atlases, and commentaries are kept in the Reference Room to provide equal access to all library patrons.

Reference books can be recognized by the “Reference” sticker on the spine and a call number that starts with an “R.”

Reference books are for in-library use only and do not circulate. Currently faculty can check out Reference books.

Indexes

Indexes to Christian Periodicals are kept in the Reference Room.

Indexes can be recognized by the call number starting with “Index.”

Indexes are for in-library use only and do not circulate.

Rare Book Collection

A number of older books and/or books in poor condition are kept in the Rare Book Collection for their protection and are located in the bookshelves in the Staff work area behind the circulation desk.

Rare books can be recognized by their call number starting with “Rare.”

Rare books can be checked out for 2 hours and MUST remain in the Library.

Audio/Visual Collection

A limited number of audio/visual materials (e.g. CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs, etc.) are collected by the library to support the curriculum of the college. The audio/visual material in the glass shelves near the circulation desk can be checked out by all patrons. The audio/visual material kept behind the circulation desk can only be checked out by the faculty member who placed the item there or if the patron has written permission from that faculty member.

The audio/visual materials are searchable from the online catalogue. There is also a printed list of visual materials available to view at the circulation desk upon request for easy reference.

The audio/visual equipment is primarily for faculty use in the classroom. Staff and students may check out audio/visual equipment for class or college related purposes upon approval from a faculty member, the college administration, or the Director of Library Services.

Periodical Collection

The library subscribes to periodicals to support the curriculum of the college. The current issues may be found on the periodical shelves located in the lobby of the library. They are arranged in alphabetical order by the title of the periodical. Back issues from the current and previous year are located behind the current issue inside the periodical shelves. Issues two years old or older are kept in the staff area of the library and may be obtained upon request at the circulation desk.

The library subscribes to many online periodical indexes and full text databases. A complete list of these databases can be found on the library website (www.glcc.edu/academics/library.aspx). Most of these databases may only be accessed on campus. Inquire at the circulation desk for current off-campus availability of these databases.

Digital Collection

In addition to the online periodical databases, the library also subscribes to netLibrary, an online collection of over 20,000 eBooks in full-text which may be accessed through the library website (www.glcc.edu/academics/library.aspx).

The library owns several hundred eBooks accessed locally through the computers in the Technology Center through BibleWorks and Logos.
